EN — Riding the radio waves at Vapriikki, Tampere

On my latest visit to Museum Centre Vapriikki in Tampere, I climbed to the second floor for the radio exhibition Riding the radio waves – From crystal radios to podcasts, then wandered straight into the Finnish Museum of Games. Two rooms, one story: how Finns have listened, tinkered and played.

Tampere among the first: Finland's first public radio station

The amateur-led station Tampereen Radio began broadcasting regularly on 1 November 1923 and is considered the first public broadcasting station in Finland, running until Yle was founded in 1926. Volunteers sold raffle tickets around the city, local actors and musicians performed for free, and from a modest shed on the banks of the Tammerkoski rapids the broadcasts could be heard from the southern Baltic Sea to Lapland.

Reporters, pirates and the battle for free music

After the Second World War Europe shifted to FM broadcasting (ULA in Finnish), and the Helvar Concertino became one of the first FM radios made in Finland. The era of Nordic pirate radio began in 1958 with ships broadcasting from international waters; Finnish listeners tuned in to stations like Radio Nord near Stockholm. In the 1970s and 80s, home-made land-based pirate stations rallied around the Fight for Free Radio movement – and many pirates later became radio professionals. A quieter panel shows radio's importance for visually impaired listeners, from free licences for the blind to today's online radio Nyöri.

Commercial radio takes off

Local commercial radio arrived in the 1980s – Radio City even flew its frequency, 96.2 MHz, on a helicopter in 1987.

My favourite nerdy detail: in the 1980s you could download software from the radio. Radio 957's Mikrot ULAlla ("Microcomputers in FM") broadcast screeching noises that listeners recorded on cassette, and a Commodore 64 decoded them back into program code.

And of course there's Nokia: a pink phone tuned to 95.00 MHz and a curvy white media phone whose Visual Radio app showed song info on screen. There's even a small podcast studio where you can record your own audio.

Next door: the Finnish Museum of Games

Finland's first game console, the Salora Playmaster, looks like an ordinary TV with a simple sports game inside, and Chesmac, written by Raimo Suonio for the Telmac kit computer, is one of Finland's first commercially published computer games – it sold 104 copies.

Muumipappa kalassa (2001) – and yes, you can play it

The stars for me: the Moomins. Muumit ja Taikurin hattu (1997) is a hand-drawn adventure voiced by the actors from Tales from Moominvalley, and Muumipappa kalassa (2001), RedLynx's Flash browser game, lets you help Moominpappa fish while Moominmamma cooks your catch – playable with a real keyboard and mouse.

Phóng viên, đài "cướp biển" và âm nhạc tự do
